"Protection from harm" This is the original Greek definition of “salvation,” and it’s an innate human need that begins at birth.

Protection can come in many shapes and forms. Sometimes it is simple, but often it is complicated and confusing. Salvation, Judge Katharine English’s personal memoir, presents a road trip through her tumultuous past that traces the many faces of her journey to protect herself, and eventually others, from harm.

Mormonism provides exotic stories, gospels, and doctrines that come to life in English’s childhood imagination—but she confronts confusing contradictions that are difficult to reconcile. Her attentive and devoted father protects her from an abusive, alcoholic mother, but his love takes a devastating turn. As English grows up, salvation drifts farther and farther away from her reality—and rebellion creeps into her life to compensate.

Throughout this journey, English digs into her childhood, reveals her dark secrets, and uncovers the forces that have influenced who she’s become—a family court judge—and chronicles her journey toward finding peace.

A tribute to parenting challenges, religious complications, and forgiving the wrongs committed to us during childhood, this memoir is ultimately a testament to the true meaning of salvation.

Review of SALVATION

English is at the forefront of 70-year old-plus authors who actually have something of value to say. Her storytelling is exquisite in its flow and fluidity. She uses language like a plush blanket to cuddle you to safety and before you can turn the page, she uses language to kick you hard in the heart. Her stories are brutal in their telling, pulling the reader in until you want to escape, but you can’t. You must turn the next page.
She explores Mormonism (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) through the eyes of a child saved by the Church and destroyed by the Church.
She exposes the myths of a Family Court judge and asks, “Who is being served….”
She hauntingly paints the picture of all sexual abuse victims: Did my Daddy rape me or does he just love me so much he wants to be near me.
She uses the metaphor of discovery as a journey back to Salt Lake City to face the facts and shadows of her childhood.
This book will amaze you with the beauty of English’s writing. It is high minded while not always being fair-minded.

As you come to the last devastating page you will be thinking about your own brothers and sisters and wondering if they have secrets to tell you.

Wonderful writing on aspects of our culture and interactions among us that few of us would have the nerve or the talent to explore. An important book in these days when 'tell all' seldom is treated with the intelligence, honesty, and humor that Katharine English has displayed. A fine work.
Best book I have read in a long time. Witty and endearing.
I love this book! It's very well written, super entertaining - unbelievable to read a biography like a really moving, heartfelt novel! It portraits the life of a young girl growingtua respite the incredible hardships grows into a strong, fun and responsible woman. it also tells about a time - politics- religions and social life in Utah and partially US that should not be forgotten. Can't wait to read more by Mrs English!
Katharine is and amazing story teller - and she has a great story to tell! I love the way she invites me into her life with her vivid and generous description. Proves that there is much more to things than we imagine and every situation, even the darkest, offers layers of emotion - love, pain, hate, regret, hope.
This is not just a stroll through Katharine’s childhood but an unconventional, uncomfortable, stumble through everything you thought you knew about abuse. It’s a great book-club selection, because you move quickly through the pages and they leave you with so much to discuss.
Salvation is a warts-and-all portrayal of a Mormon childhood that reconciles the author's past self with her current, deeper understanding of events, without losing the luscious details of a child's memory. The story conjures an odd mix of sweetness and horror that characterize some of our most intense family moments. On on an unvarnished, hilarious, and somewhat sad landscape of Mormonism on its home turf, it shows the doctrine, not as preached, but as lived, with all its religious, class, and financial strands. The book is enjoyable both as a memoir and an analysis. I loved it.
This book was a head-spinner for me. Anyone who grew up with a mean mother, or within the Mormon Church, or in Salt Lake City in the fifties, or who felt saddened and abandoned by a beloved father, will find a page-turner of recognition here. But wait. that doesn't even begin to tell the layers.
t could not get over the shocking realization of how the mean mother had a redeeming feature, and the beloved father had a devastating side. But the theme that turned my head around and made me sit for hours staring out the window was this what constitutes real abuse and what constitutes
real love? Talk about overcoming horrid memories and living a life of love and forgiveness!
Katharine English writes beautifully and has written a very tight story that, to me, never had even a boring sentence!
I want to smack both her parents, but of course they are gone. But the children they left behind seemed to have survived very well.
Once again, the human spirit can get up from being slapped to the floor and stand tall and move forward.
I cannot wait to read her next memoir, because this story isn't even half over. What a ride!!
