Jesus Himself, is a very short book that represents two messages that were prepared and preached by Andrew Murray, a South African Minister who lived from 1828 to 1917. The messages contained are simple and timeless. Murray was known for standing in opposition to Humanistic Rationalism and nowhere did he stand more in opposition to it than when he perceived its presence masquerading as Christian Religion. Murray in his ministry and in this book was relentless in bringing the focus back time and time again to the person of Jesus Christ. Murray opposed nothing more than even the hint of a Christless Christianity.In these short but powerful messages, Murray reveals his "secret" to powerful Christian living. It's really no secret at all, but is profound in its simplicity. The "secret" to the Christian life is exclusive and complete reliance upon Jesus Christ to accomplish everything He has promised within us without our attempts to "help" Him along the way.
While reading this work I was struck by the irony that many of the beliefs and self-reliance that Murray identifies and confronts are no less timely and pertinent than they apparently were at the time of their original writing. Murray's writings as a whole went on to have a profound impact upon many revival movements, particularly in Wales and Murray also was very influential in the subsequent ministry of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee and their call to personal holiness apart from reliance upon our own efforts and abilities.
I read this book on the Kindle where it is available as a free download. Don't let the price fool you however as to its true value. The Kindle version reads well and there are no difficulties with navigating the work in that medium as opposed to a traditional book.
5 stars. A wonderful introduction to Murray as well as in invitation to explore more of his writings which remain as timely now as they were in the past.

I happened to buy two of these books. The first one I bought was in Sept., 2014, and I bought another one in Sept., 2015. They have different covers, but they are both by the same author so I am assuming they are the same sermon. I have skimmed over a good portion of both, and they appear to be the same so I am copying the review I wrote for one onto this one as well
God's timing never ceases to amaze me. Just yesterday the sermon asked what was missing. Got me to thinking, inspired another poem, and I told the preacher I hoped he wasn't getting discouraged and thinking of looking for another congregation because perhaps he thought this one had developed a calloused heart or grown dull of hearing.
For the few years we have been here, everyone I have ever heard mention this congregation has commented about how unique it is how active, involved, loving, generous (both with time and material needs), etc. And yet for the past few weeks the preacher keeps asking, "Can you hear me?", "Are you getting this?" "Is this going over your head?" "Is anyone awake out there?"
In response to my query today, he said he was still happy to be working here, but he supposes it is always that question of (and I quote) "something more".
THIS book explains precisely how to find that "something more". Not for a congregation, of course, but for you or me as an individual. Because the answer is an intimate relationship with a living Jesus, (and the book gives a step by step plan to help achieve this relationship).
The writing is definitely old school "Thees" and "Thous", but since I prefer the RSV, I am well acquainted with this anyway, and I LOVE that language when speaking to God. Very poetic (which works for me since that was the talent He gave me).
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a closer, deeper, more intimate relationship with Jesus. Anyone who thinks something is missing in their life and is looking for that "something more".
I read 199 Promises of God and 199 Thoughts on Prayer, but I had no idea they were written in such a totally different era. Considering that Mr. Murray died in 1917, almost a hundred years ago, his writings are still relevant and palaptable. So when I stumbled upon this book, I decided to give it a try.
I am so happy that I did. His expounding of the scripture in this book is wonderful, and has great life application. I found myself quoting him the first day I read it. The commitment of this book is very low, as it's only about 30 pages, and it's free - so why not give it a try?
